The most expensive cars to insure are often the ones with the highest sticker prices. But, this isn't always the case. We found some real surprises in our recent study of over 300 models.

The formula that insurance providers use to determine rates is mysterious. You'll all but need a PhD to figure out what it will cost to insure your new car. The majority of the factors are obvious, such as your age, driving record, and the cost and characteristics of the car itself. There are many other less evident elements as well. Your location, homeownership, credit rating, employment and marital statuses all contribute.

We've found that the two biggest factors that significantly increase insurance costs at the brand and model level are:

  • Speed - Auto manufacturers have packed once-unbelievable amounts of horsepower into small, lightweight cars. The raw speed of these rocket ships on wheels cause accident rates to increase, often resulting in more severe damage.

  • Complexity - Alternative fuel vehicles, such as hybrids and full EVs, have complex and expensive battery charging systems. Those can be quite costly to replace if they become damaged. This also holds true for any recently released models bundled with the latest tech.

Of course, it would be nice to get an estimate on what it will cost to insure a new car before you buy it. Too many of us have had unpleasant surprises along the way. If your driving stats aren’t great, you could spend as much, or even more, on car insurance as you do on the car payments themselves. But, what fun is that?

We want to help you to avoid that sort of situation. So we're giving you a sneak peek into some of the most expensive cars to insure. Our rankings below show annual insurance costs for passenger cars and SUVs of popular brands. These exclude trucks and luxury vehicles, which can get really expensive. Our rankings are based upon a 40 year old driver, with full coverage and good credit driving 13,000 miles per year. The study spanned over a dozen providers in different sized markets.

Our Insurance Calculator will also show you what it would cost to insure over 300 different models. It takes into consideration your age, driving record, and credit history. While these are pretty good estimates, they're not exact figures. For an actual insurance quote, check out our Competitive Quote Tool. You’ll be able to shop insurance prices without even having to pick up the phone. Our quote comparison tools are free to use, but we do receive a small commission if you find a better deal.

Chevrolet Blazer

Chevrolet Blazer Insurance Cost. Photo: Chevrolet

The Chevy Blazer has been around for so long, that it once roamed the earth with the dinosaurs. With that, and given that Blazers are everywhere, one would think that insurance costs would be low. So, we are as surprised as you are to see them on our list. In years past, full-sized Blazers drew a crowd that liked to use their SUVs as true off-roaders, and hence had more insurance risk, but not the case with the current-day Blazer. You're much more likely to see a Blazer in line at Starbucks than hitting the trails and back woods with their modern-day SUV.

  • New Price: $42,613
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,875
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $156

Volkswagen Arteon

Volkswagen Arteon Insurance Cost. Photo: Volkswagen

The sleek and stylish Arteon is just sporty enough to draw a younger (higher risk) crowd. It also doesn't help that most parts come from Germany, which is never a good thing when you have to pay for replacements (See BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, etc.). While definitely not on the cheaper end as it relates to insurance, owners should at least feel comforted that the Arteon is roughly 10% less expensive to insure than an Audi A5 or BMW 3 Series-if that makes you feel better.

  • New Price: $45,725
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,891
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $158

Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey Insurance Cost. Photo: Dodge

For our write-up of the Journey, just see the Dodge Grand Caravan. Really, why is this crossover SUV an expensive vehicle to insure? We're not sure ourselves. Our best guess is that these things are ridden hard and take a beating. Perhaps the kids throwing cheese puffs in the back seat is distracting mom or dad as they navigate that parking spot and don't notice that parking meter in the rear-view mirror. In any event, Journeys are no bargain when it comes to insurance-and it's a mystery as to why.

  • New Price: $27,222
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,920
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $160

KIA Cadenza

KIA Cadenza Insurance Cost. Photo: KIA

While only half as big as the Kia Telluride, the Cadenza is actually more expensive to insure-which is perplexing. The Cadenza is sleek, but subdued and not particularly flashy. It's also been in production since 2009, so you would think that parts and repair costs would be low. However, for some unexplained reason, it's more expensive to insure than its Honda or Toyota competitors. Better to ask your insurance company about this one, as we're stumped as to why it's on the list.

  • New Price: $41,050
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,924
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $160

Subaru BRZ

Subaru BRZ Insurance Cost. Photo: Subaru

Of course the BRZ is one of the most expensive cars to insure. This pocket-rocket, jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, is exactly what a younger generation is looking for in a speedster. With the engine in front, and power to the real wheels, you can smell the rubber burning already. It's also exactly what makes insurance companies shy away from the BRZ, as the nameplate is likely to have younger drivers with a heavy accelerator foot, and a stash of Red Bull behind the front seats. With an entry price below $30K, BRZ owners will use the extra savings to add a Nitro pack and some bigger rims-just what your insurance agent wants to hear.

  • New Price: $32,343
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,937
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $161

Ford Mustang

Mustangs have been a favorite of an enthusiastic crowd for decades, and its emblem is symbolic of just that-it's not a walking pony, it's a galloping mustang. Mustang owners like to show off their steeds on the highway, and on the backroads-and their insurance rates reflect their owners' gusto for life. Mustangs have always been expensive to insure-not so much for the cost of repair-but for the frequency of repair. The under-25 age group is prone to be lead-footed, and the car has always been a favorite of pursuit by state troopers. If you are thinking of a spirited coupe, remember to check the insurance rates before you buy.

  • New Price: $49,054
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,937
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $161

FIAT 124 Spider

FIAT 124 Spider Insurance Cost. Photo: FIAT

No list of most expensive vehicles to insure would be complete without at least one Italian entry-so, we bring you the Fiat Spider. Oops, wait a minute... The fiat is now owned by FCA, formerly known as Chrysler, and is actually manufactured by Mazda in Japan. Never mind about the Italian thing. In any event, this little roadster, the sister of the Mazda MX-5, is a fun convertible that is made for sunny days and drives along the coast. Insurance premiums on the Spider will cast some clouds on your sunny day, however, as it makes it onto our list of most expensive vehicles to insure.

  • New Price: $30,257
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,961
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $163

Dodge Grand Caravan

If you had to design a vehicle that didn't appeal to a high-risk crowd, it would look like a Dodge Grand Caravan. They don't have big V-8 engines; they don't attract teens-unless they need a ride somewhere, and their owners aren't known for their need for speed. So, it's a mystery why a Grand Caravan would be an expensive vehicle to insure. Perhaps it's fender-benders in the school parking lot, or baseballs through the windows. But, other than potentially carrying a lot of occupants, this battle cruiser is a low-risk vehicle that just happens to have high insurance rates.

  • New Price: $30,342
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,964
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $164

KIA Telluride

This monster Kia, with three rows of seats and room for 7, has wowed critics and received rave reviews. It even was named the 2020 World Car of the Year. The Kia brand hasn't historically been thought of as a "luxury" vehicle, but, it's sure getting close. It even has a classy name to suggest that you'll be pulling up to the ski lodge with 5 kids climbing out of the back, clad in all of their ski gear. There's a lot to the Telluride, and it's a new model this year, so it's not surprising that insurance rates are going to be a little higher than average.

  • New Price: $46,366
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,967
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $164

Nissan Altima

Nissan Altima Insurance Cost. Photo: Nissan

The Altima has been around since the Middle Ages, or at least since 1992. It's been a bread-and-butter car for Nissan for years, and is now on its 6th generation. With that, one would expect insurance rates to be lower for the Altima, as Nissan produces a lot of them, and parts and repair costs should be low-just like Toyotas. However, this isn't the case, and this mainstream sedan is surprisingly on the upper end of insurance costs.

  • New Price: $29,111
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,972
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $164

Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota Land Cruiser Insurance Cost. Photo: Toyota

This behemoth from Toyota is a lot of ride. With seating for up to 8, there's plenty of metal surrounding its passengers-which is great if you're in an accident. For insurers, however, there's a lot of expensive metal that could get damaged, should you decide to roll it while 4-wheeling. While the Land Cruiser does not rank well on its cost of insurance, this is offset by the fact that you're driving a tank-like structure that is a relative bargain compared to its luxury rivals.

  • New Price: $92,988
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,980
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $165

Subaru WRX

Anything with a hood scoop and a rear wing is not going to be inexpensive to insure. This lightweight, highly-powered terror would make any insurer quiver. WRX owners are looking for power, speed, and the ability to lay down some rubber on the pavement-and this is with factory stock models. Those who own a WRX love to modify their rides, just to ensure that their passengers stay pinned to their seats when accelerating. Sure, a WRX is hell on wheels, but just be prepared when the first insurance bill comes in the mail. You might want to put that NOS kit on hold for now.

  • New Price: $36,300
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $1,986
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $166

Chevrolet Bolt EV

Well, we know that Bolts don't exactly "bolt" down the street, so it's not likely that they have high insurance costs as a result of teens drag-racing them down Main St., or doing donuts in the mall parking lot. But, those electric engines can be expensive to repair, should you get in an accident, or run over by a turtle. What you save in gas is somewhat offset by increased insurance costs, so if you're looking for economy, you better shop insurance rates before climbing into this EV.

  • New Price: $34,018
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $2,175
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $181

Honda Clarity

Honda Clarity Insurance Cost. Photo: Honda

Just for the sake of Clarity (couldn't resist), this Honda is likely on our expensive to insure list, as its hybrid and EV components make collisions costly. Like the Chevy Bolt, high-risk motorists probably aren't attracted to the Clarity's 0-60 times, or scorching track times. One has to conclude that this family sedan is just expensive to put in the shop, should you have an unpleasant encounter with a shopping cart or a snow bank.

  • New Price: $36,249
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $2,176
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $181

Nissan 370Z

Nissan 370Z Insurance Cost. Photo: Nissan

If it comes from Nissan and has a "Z" in the name, it's not going to be inexpensive to insure-and the 370Z is certainly no exception. High in horsepower, and attractive to those who ooze adrenaline, the 370Z is in a high-risk class for insurers, and rightly so. Perhaps if there were a throttle limiter, or software that kept speeds below 70 mph, then insurance rates would be lower. But then again, who wants that in a Z? Owners will just have to take the good with the bad when it comes to 370Z insurance costs.

  • New Price: $48,730
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $2,197
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $183

See the Nissan 370Z Insurance Cost Estimates

Nissan Maxima

Nissan Maxima Insurance Cost. Photo: Nissan

The entire Nissan line-up is costly to insure, and is ranked the most expensive brand out of 19 popular vehicle makes. It makes sense that the 370Z is on this list, but the Maxima is hard to rationalize. Just look at the other vehicles that are nearby on this list, and one can see that the Maxima sticks out as not belonging among the others. The one thing that is notable for Maximas, however, is that they always seems to be on the list for the highest theft rates. So, don't forget to lock the doors, and bring your keys.

  • New Price: $44,610
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $2,246
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $187

Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai Palisade Insurance Cost. Photo: Hyundai

The Palisade is Hyundai's largest vehicle to date, and it's also the most expensive Hyundai to insure. While the Santa Fe replacement technically falls into the "mid-sized crossover SUV" category, with seating for up to 8, it's still a lot of vehicle. There's also a lot that could need fixing if it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like the Telluride, it doesn't help that it came out in 2020, so there's not a lot of history for insurance companies to assess risk and future collision costs. As time moves forward, look for Palisade insurance costs to come down.

  • New Price: $47,261
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $2,246
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $187

Chevrolet Corvette

Fiberglass and high horsepower mean two things-lightweight speed and costly repairs. While Vette owners love their rides, their insurance companies aren't quite as fond of them-unless paid high premiums. We all knew that Corvettes would not rank well for insurance costs, but relative to Nissan Maximas or Dodge Grand Caravans, they seem like bargains. My guess is that for the average Corvette driver, paying a little extra in insurance costs is not going to dent their pride of being a Vette owner.

  • New Price: $103,298
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $2,369
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $197

Toyota Supra

Toyota Supra Insurance Cost. Photo: Toyota

The recently re-introduced Supra is art on wheels. But to own art, one has to pay a price-in this case, it's in the form of big insurance premiums. Supra owners want refinement and style, but they also want to know that the power is there if and when they need it. Like Vette owners, their passion is their ride, and if they have to pay more for what they want, so be it. We could tell you that better insurance bargains are out there, but we'd be wasting our breath-so happy motoring.

  • New Price: $57,814
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $3,473
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $289

Nissan GT-R

Nissan GT-R Insurance Cost. Photo: Nissan

The GT-R has a cult-like following, and it's no surprise, as its looks and performance are just mind-bending. Those that own or keep track of the GT-R, know it is a beast, and it has a world-wide following as a result. It's also popular with those who want to take what the factory has given them, and imprint their own signature on their treasured ride. This comes in the form of making it lighter, sleeker, more powerful, or anything that will just make it faster. This is heaven for GT-R owners, but hell for their insurers. So, just strap in when behind the wheel, or when opening your insurance agent's mail-both are pulse-raising. This is the most expensive car to insure on our list.

  • New Price: $158,940
  • Annual Insurance Cost: $4,704
  • Monthly Insurance Cost: $392
